One of my Wood Badge goals is to educate our Scouts on what higher adventure activities exist within a day's drive of us (west-central IN). This would include north AL, northeast AR, north GA, IA, IL, KY, most of MI, MO, north MS, west NC, OH, west PA, TN, WV and most of WI.

I'm aware of quite a few, but assume I'm a foreign Scout wanting to have a great time in those areas. Where would you direct me?

Thanks,
Michael

Try camping on Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie - take the ferry out to the island from Catawba OH. My dad has camped there for years & it's where I first camped. Can fish from pier or if someone in unit has boat, can go out on lake - make sure you know where the Canadian border is if you only have fishing license for Ohio. Side trip (by ferry) to South Bass Island - Perry's monument is there. Don't remember who Perry was? Excellent opportunity for history lesson! Both Middle Bass & Put-in-Bay (on South Bass Island) have websites.

Thanks for the suggestions. I added a few.

If you feel any on the below map aren't appropriate for Scouts let me know why.

You can find the map at

Kelly's Island in Lake Erie is also pretty nice.

Of course in a year or two, THE SUMMIT, BSA's new High Adventure site in WV will open (and become the permanent site for future Jamborees).
