Scouting.org has put in a space filler for the Chess MB on their merit badge page:

I was wondering when that entry was going to be made :)

I have an order in at the local scout shop for a pamphlet. They were hoping to get it in this past week.

I'll keep my eyes out for official requirements. ;)

Don't quote me, but... It's my understanding (a VERY reliable little bird told me) that the final printing deadline of the Chess MB pamphlet was met; but, was refused (by BSA) due to (the Printer) failing the final QC. So, the printer's on the hook for this one and has, of course, bumped the re-print up to "JOB #1".

Since the official unveiling is not until next month, I honestly believe the re-print to hit the NDC w/i 2-3 more weeks, which, frankly, is about the fastest possible turn-around time I could expect.

I think Paul knows what the standard first run is... 10k copies? 20k copies? (I can't remember.)

That's good to know. Thanks.

And I see that on this board that Chess needs to be added to the list:

"American Business, American Cultures, American Heritage, American Labor, Animal Science, Archaeology, Archery, Architecture, Art, Astronomy, Athletics, Atomic Energy, Auto Mechanics, Aviation, Backpacking, Basketry, Bird Study, Bugling, Canoeing, Chemistry, Cinematography, Climbing, Coin Collecting, Collections, Computers, Cooking, and Crime Prevention."

Per BSA request, the Chess MB requirements have been taken down from MeritBadge.Org until Sep. 7th, 2011.

In the meantime, you can still see Chess for learning (and teaching) resources.

Can someone please email me what WAS up? With the understanding, of course, that it's not the final version. I'd like to get my application in as MBC :D

All of mine have gone to the state finals. Of course, I will admit that a 3rd grader beat me during the cruise ship chess tourney.

Meritbadge.org and usscouts.org both got copies of the requirements from one of the Scouters who was involved in creating the badge, and who received an advance copy of the pamphlet. After both sites posted them, we got a nice note from BSA's Innovation staff (i.e. the people in charge of new merit badges) asking that we not publish the info until BSA's official announcement, which will occur on September 7th. (They'll post the requirements on scouting.org at that time, too.) The note said:

Please remove the information until BSA officially releases the information on our website. ... It does cause problems if Scouts and others see the information prior to the media and the official BSA release.
Here's the schedule they also sent us:

September 7, 2011, Wednesday, Chess requirements and MB patch posted on http://www.scouting.org/meritbadges.aspx
September 7, 2011, Wednesday, Press Release
September 10, 2011, Saturday, Pamphlets and patch available in Scout Shops and at http://www.scoutstuff.org
September 10, 2011, Saturday, Launch event in St. Louis at World Chess Hall of Fame http://worldchesshof.org/
November 18-20, Friday through Sunday, Event during the National Scholastic K-12 Championship at the Dallas Anatole http://www.uschess.org/tournaments/2011/k12/

Launch event participants:
USCF-United States Chess Federation (Merit Badge developers)
Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis
World Chess Hall of Fame
Great Rivers BSA Council
Greater St. Louis BSA Council

Without listing the actual requirements, I don't think BSA will mind if I reveal a basic list of items the Scouts and Counselors will need to know and demonstrate: History, benefits, etiquette, basic rules, score-keeping, basic play, strategy, tactics, problem solving, and of course, the Scouts must play a number of actual games or compete in a tournament.

There are no standard "Show first aid ..." nor "Discuss careers ..." requirements.

What no first aid requirements? How is a MBC to be sure the scout knows how to treat blisters and callouses on the fingers?
